When Hashem asked the Jewish People if they would like the Torah, they replied
Na-aseh Ver Nishmah----We will carry it out and in order to do it we will study it.
At the giving of the Ten Commandments which took place on Shavous the Jewish People made an eternal contract with Hashem to serve him and in return Hashem made an eternal promise that we, the Jewish People should remain under his special protection.
Oral Jewish Law tells us that the soul of
every Jewish Person who was to be born in the future gathered at
Each Year on the first day of Shavous when we assemble in Shul to hear the reading of the Ten Commandments from the Sefer Torah we renew the promise that we personally made at Mount Sinai. This is similar to the modern day custom in secular circles of a husband and wife renewing their wedding vows.
